A new Illinois law has given residential and small commercial electricity consumers the ability to choose a new electricity supplier from among suppliers competing to provide service. Customers can choose suppliers individually. Or, they can form buying consortiums through a process called “aggregation” to combine their usage together and to use larger bargaining power to get lower rates and more options.
Electricity deregulation separates energy delivery (the utility company) from the supplier (choose one from among several competitors). Customers can choose an electric energy supplier offering a better price than what the utility is offering now. Electricity would still be delivered by the same local utility; the local utility would no longer be the supplier. Many suppliers also offer other choices including load management, energy efficiency and renewable resource options.Cities and counties can now offer aggregation services, paving the way for customers within their communities to take advantage of access to competitive markets in a way that offers advantages beyond those available to them if they act individually.
